Referring Patients to Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland
A dedicated referral resource for optometrists and ophthalmologists treating patients with keratoconus and complex corneal conditions.
Why Refer to Us
Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland is an exclusively keratoconus-focused practice — one of the few in the region dedicated entirely to keratoconus and complex corneal conditions. We receive referrals from optometrists and ophthalmologists across Maryland and beyond, particularly for patients whose vision needs have exceeded what standard care can address.
🎯
Exclusive KC Focus
Every patient we see has keratoconus or a related corneal condition. This is all we do — which means your patient is in specialized hands from the first call.
📋
Formal Reports Back to You
Following every evaluation, we send a formal clinical report back to the referring doctor. You will always know what we found and what we recommended.
🔬
Advanced Lens Technology
We offer wavefront scleral lenses, PROSE, EyePrintPro, and scan-based specialty designs — options most practices do not have access to.
Which Patients to Refer
We welcome referrals for patients presenting with any of the following:
- Diagnosed or suspected keratoconus at any stage
- Pellucid marginal degeneration or other ectatic conditions
- Post-surgical irregular corneas (post-LASIK, post-RK, post-PKP, post-DALK)
- High irregular astigmatism not correctable with standard lenses
- Poor best-corrected visual acuity in spectacles
- Soft lens intolerance or failure in a KC patient
- Failed rigid gas permeable or hybrid lens fits
- Patients currently wearing scleral lenses who are unhappy with their vision, comfort, or fit
- Patients still experiencing higher-order aberrations despite correction — including glare, halos, starbursting, ghosting, or difficulty driving at night due to oncoming headlights
- Patients who have been told “nothing more can be done”
- PROSE or EyePrintPro candidates
- Patients seeking a second opinion on their lens options
- Complex KC cases that are time-intensive to manage and fall outside your practice’s primary focus — we are happy to be a trusted resource so your patient gets the specialized attention they need
- Colleagues who simply want the best possible outcome for their KC patient and prefer to refer to a practice where this is all we do
When in doubt, refer.
If your patient has keratoconus and is struggling — even if they have already tried specialty lenses elsewhere — we encourage you to send them our way. Complex or previously fitted patients are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of patients should I refer?
We welcome referrals for any patient with keratoconus or a related ectatic corneal condition — at any stage. This includes patients with pellucid marginal degeneration, post-surgical irregular corneas, high irregular astigmatism, and patients who have failed soft lenses, RGPs, or hybrid lenses. If your patient is struggling with their vision and standard options have not worked, we want to see them.
Will I receive a report after the evaluation?
Yes. We send a formal clinical report back to the referring doctor following every evaluation. You will have a complete picture of our findings and the treatment plan we have recommended for your patient.
Do my patients need a formal referral to be seen?
No. Patients can contact us directly and do not need a formal referral to schedule. However, some insurance plans may require one for coverage purposes, so it is worth advising patients to check with their insurer.
Do you accept patients who have already been fitted with scleral lenses elsewhere?
Yes. We regularly see patients who have been previously fitted — whether the lenses are not providing adequate vision, are uncomfortable, or the patient simply wants a second opinion. A prior fitting history does not disqualify a patient from being seen.
Can I request referral pads for my office?
Yes. We mail printed referral pads to requesting practices. You can also download a printable PDF version. To request pads for your office, contact us at (410) 469-7111 or use our contact form.
How quickly will my patient be contacted after I refer?
We aim to reach out to referred patients promptly. Dr. Azman will personally call your patient to discuss their history and determine the best path forward before scheduling their in-office appointment.
