EyePrintPro Impression-Based Scleral Lenses for Keratoconus
EyePrintPro™ is the most advanced scleral lens option available for patients with keratoconus and complex corneal conditions — designed specifically for cases where standard scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, and even PROSE treatment have not provided adequate vision or comfort.
Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland was the first practice in the state of Maryland to offer EyePrintPro, and has many years of experience fitting this technology for patients with the most challenging ocular surfaces. Dr. Benjamin Azman, OD, leads all EyePrintPro fittings at our Baltimore practice.
What Is EyePrintPro?
EyePrintPro™ is a prosthetic scleral cover shell that improves vision by creating a new, smooth, refractive surface for the eye. Unlike standard scleral lenses — which are fitted through trial-and-error using prefabricated curvatures — EyePrintPro is made from a physical impression of the patient’s ocular surface, similar to a dental mold.
This impression captures the exact contour and irregularities of the individual eye, allowing for a precise back-surface fit and highly individualized optics. The result is a lens that matches the eye perfectly from the start — rather than approximating it through fitting iterations.
EyePrintPro was developed by Dr. Christine Sindt at the University of Iowa, in collaboration with Keith Parker at Advanced Vision Technologies in Denver, Colorado. It is made from high oxygen permeable material with superior quality optics.
How EyePrintPro Is Made
The fitting process begins with an impression of the ocular surface taken at our Baltimore office. That impression is then shipped to EyePrint Prosthetics LLC, where it is digitized using 3D scanning technology and machined using computer numerically controlled (CNC) systems to produce a lens that precisely matches the patient’s cornea and sclera.
Because the lens geometry is derived directly from the eye rather than from a library of standard curvatures, EyePrintPro can accommodate surface irregularities that no standard scleral lens design — and no fitting approach — can match.
How EyePrintPro Differs From Standard Scleral Lenses and PROSE
Standard scleral lenses are fitted through trial-and-error with prefabricated lenses of varying curvatures. They work well for most keratoconus patients but cannot fully conform to highly irregular or asymmetric ocular surfaces.
PROSE treatment (BostonSight) uses OCT measurements and a series of customized trial lenses over multiple visits to arrive at a semi-customized fit. It is more precise than standard sclerals and effective for many complex cases, but still uses parameterized curvatures rather than a direct surface impression.
EyePrintPro uses a physical impression of the ocular surface — the equivalent of a dental mold for the eye — to produce an exact geometric match. It is typically recommended when standard sclerals and PROSE have not provided adequate comfort or vision, or when the surface irregularity is too extreme for parameterized fitting approaches.
Who Is EyePrintPro For?
EyePrintPro is indicated for patients who have significant ocular surface irregularity and have been unsuccessful or uncomfortable with other lens options. Conditions it can address include:
- Advanced keratoconus
- Irregular astigmatism
- Pellucid marginal degeneration
- Post-corneal transplant irregularity
- Post-LASIK ectasia
- Severe ocular surface disease (dry eye)
- Chemical burns
- Corneal scarring
- Pinguecula and pterygium
- Stem cell failure
- Extreme ocular deformation from trauma or disease
It is also appropriate for patients who have already tried standard scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, or PROSE treatment and are still not achieving satisfactory vision or comfort.
EyePrintPro™ is indicated for a wide range of ocular conditions — keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, ocular surface disease, corneal transplants, post-LASIK ectasia, pellucid marginal degeneration, chemical burns, pinguecula, pterygium, and stem cell failure — as well as patients seeking enhanced vision and comfort when standard lenses have not been satisfactory.
The EyePrintPro impression is shipped to EyePrint Prosthetics LLC, where it is digitized using 3D scanning technology and manufactured using CNC machining systems. This process produces a precise match for each individual’s cornea and sclera — crafted from high oxygen permeable material with superior quality optics.
Frequently Asked Questions — EyePrintPro
What is EyePrintPro and how does it work?
EyePrintPro is a prosthetic scleral cover shell created from a physical impression of the patient’s ocular surface — similar to a dental mold. The impression captures the exact contour and irregularities of the cornea and sclera. It is then digitized using 3D scanning and manufactured using CNC machining at EyePrint Prosthetics LLC to produce a lens that precisely matches the individual eye. Unlike standard scleral lenses fitted through trial-and-error, EyePrintPro achieves an exact back-surface fit from the first lens.
How is EyePrintPro different from standard scleral lenses?
Standard scleral lenses are fitted through a trial-and-error process using prefabricated lenses of varying curvatures. EyePrintPro is made from a physical impression of the individual eye’s surface, capturing the exact irregularities that standard lens designs cannot match. This eliminates the fitting iterations required with standard sclerals and produces a more precise back-surface fit — particularly beneficial for highly irregular corneas where standard designs cannot achieve adequate stability or comfort.
How is EyePrintPro different from PROSE treatment?
Both EyePrintPro and PROSE are advanced scleral lens options for complex cases that standard sclerals cannot adequately address. PROSE uses OCT measurements and customized trial lenses over multiple visits to arrive at a semi-customized fit. EyePrintPro uses a direct physical impression of the ocular surface to create an exact match. EyePrintPro is typically recommended when PROSE has not provided adequate comfort or vision, or when the ocular surface is too irregular for even PROSE to fit well.
Who is a good candidate for EyePrintPro?
EyePrintPro is indicated for patients with advanced keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, ocular surface disease (including severe dry eye), post-surgical corneas (corneal transplants, post-LASIK ectasia), pellucid marginal degeneration, chemical burns, and extreme ocular surface irregularities. It is particularly appropriate for patients who have already tried standard scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, or PROSE treatment without achieving adequate vision or comfort.
Is Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland experienced with EyePrintPro?
Yes. Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland was the first practice in the state of Maryland to offer EyePrintPro, and has many years of experience providing this technology. Dr. Benjamin Azman is the lead specialist — fitting EyePrintPro lenses as part of a comprehensive advanced lens program that includes standard custom scleral lenses, wavefront HOA-correcting lenses, scan-based lenses, and PROSE treatment.
What conditions can EyePrintPro treat beyond keratoconus?
EyePrintPro is designed for any condition that creates significant ocular surface irregularity. Beyond keratoconus, it is indicated for irregular astigmatism, pellucid marginal degeneration, severe dry eye and ocular surface disease, corneal scarring, post-corneal transplant irregularity, post-LASIK ectasia, chemical burns, pinguecula, pterygium, and stem cell failure. It can also be used for patients seeking enhanced vision and comfort when standard lenses have not been satisfactory.
