Dr. Benjamin Azman
Advanced Scleral Lens Expert
Keratoconus Specialist
Dr. Benjamin Azman is a nationally recognized keratoconus specialist based in Baltimore, Maryland, known for helping patients who remain unhappy with their keratoconus vision despite years of care elsewhere. Patients travel to see Dr. Azman from across Maryland and Virginia, throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and from across the United States and internationally seeking the highest level of customized keratoconus vision available.
A graduate of the State University of New York College of Optometry, Dr. Azman has dedicated his career almost exclusively to the diagnosis, management, and visual rehabilitation of keratoconus and complex irregular corneas. Many of his patients come after struggling with uncomfortable scleral lenses, persistent glare and ghosting, unstable clarity, or being told “nothing more can be done.”
Leadership & Specialized Focus
Dr. Azman serves as Medical Director of:
- Keratoconus Specialists of Maryland
- Azman Eye Care Specialists
- The Dry Eye Center of Maryland
- The Myopia Control Center at Azman Eye Care Specialists
While he provides comprehensive eye care, his primary clinical focus is advanced keratoconus management and specialty contact lens design. His practice is specifically equipped and staffed to manage complex corneal cases requiring precision diagnostics and highly customized optical solutions.
Advanced Keratoconus Lens Design
Dr. Azman specializes in designing advanced keratoconus contact lens systems tailored to each individual cornea, including:
- Custom scleral lenses
- PVR PROSE
- Wavefront HOA-correcting lenses
- Impression-based scleral lenses (including EyePrintPRO)
- Hybrid and specialty contact lenses
Standard scleral lenses often improve comfort but may not correct higher-order aberrations (HOAs) responsible for glare, halos, ghosting, and reduced contrast sensitivity. By integrating advanced diagnostics such as wavefront aberrometry, corneal topography, Pentacam, and OCT imaging, Dr. Azman engineers lens systems that improve real-world visual performance—not just the eye chart.
His philosophy is clear: no two keratoconus corneas are the same, and no two lens designs should be either.
Helping Patients Others Could Not
A significant portion of Dr. Azman’s patients seek care after unsuccessful experiences elsewhere. Many have seen multiple providers. Some were told surgery was their only option. Others achieved a “fit” but never achieved functional vision.
Dr. Azman is often described by colleagues as a “doctor’s doctor,” with optometrists and ophthalmologists referring their most complex keratoconus cases to him. Beyond professional referrals, several eye doctors who personally have keratoconus choose Dr. Azman for their own care—a rare and meaningful endorsement of his expertise.
Clinical Experience & Community Commitment
Dr. Azman completed a clinical rotation at the Perry Point VA Hospital in Perryville, Maryland, where he managed complex cases including keratoconus, severe dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. This experience strengthened his diagnostic precision and reinforced his commitment to detail-driven care.
He remains actively engaged in continuing education, research, and clinical advancements in keratoconus management. He also participates in community outreach and offers keratoconus awareness initiatives to promote early detection and intervention.
Beyond Keratoconus
While keratoconus remains his primary specialty, Dr. Azman also provides advanced care in:
- Severe dry eye disease (including IPL and customized therapies)
- Corneal disease management
- Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) and myopia control
- Specialty contact lenses for irregular corneas
This broader corneal and ocular surface expertise strengthens his ability to manage complex cases where keratoconus overlaps with dry eye or other corneal instability.
A Personalized, Concierge-Level Approach
Born and raised in Baltimore, Dr. Azman values his strong ties to the local community. As a devoted husband and father of five, he brings a compassionate, family-centered approach to patient care. He believes every patient deserves time, attention, and individualized solutions—not a one-size-fits-all lens.
For patients seeking clearer, more stable, and more comfortable vision—often after other options have failed—Dr. Benjamin Azman offers expertise, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence in advanced keratoconus care.
